Measurements of the shoes

  • Weight: 17.4 oz / 493.3 g
  • Height of the collar: 6.0 in 15.2 cm

We tried on KEEN Targhee II Waterproof shoes before writing you that piece of article. And here is our experience:

First of all, Keen footwear almost needs no introduction, as they have been making quality footwear for outdoor lovers for about two decades.  Keen Targhee ii is their flagship hiking shoe that helped establish the name of Keen as a significant player in the outdoor gear world

Choosing the right pair of shoes is almost like dating a new person; we can tell pretty quickly if this relationship is going to be a long term relationship or not.

That’s why when we had the chance to try on keen Targhee 2, we didn’t miss it!

Let’s dive right in.

Luckily, Keen Targhee ii is perfect to go straight out of the box. NO NEED to BREAKING IN

You will know that the cushion and padding design are doing their job the moment you wear them. Credits go to Torsion Stability E.S.S. for superior support and impact management.

One of the best features of Keen Targhee is the lacing system. It is configured with one upper, one middle, and three lower locking eyelets. The middle loop eyelet extends to the back heel and crosses to the other in an “X” shape.

This exciting building allows for a controlled and firm fit that provides incredible ankle and heel support.

We found it almost impossible for the heel to slip or rub against the shoe inside once the boots got laced uptight.

Owing to the Keen Targhee lacing system’s configuration and generous footpad, it can accommodate wide feet.

Targhee ii does not provide excellent ankle protection and stability than some other higher cut and burlier boots. But for its lightweight category, it offers excellent comfort in various terrains.

General shoes made with leather uppers breathe less than shoes built with more mesh and foam. Like Gore-Tex technology, the Keen dry waterproof membrane lets moisture escape but resists moisture from getting into the shoes inside.

To be honest, shoes featuring Gore-Tex breathe better than Keen membrane does, especially in very hot weather. With a lightweight boot sock, you might find the breathability is good.

But with heavyweight or wool socks, your feet will not breathe much.

Targhee 2 can hold up to small streams and big rainstorms .as long as your pants cover the top openings, water does not funnel into the boots.

Boots with a lot of seams around the toe cap and side panel areas leak, though.  It is like Merrel Moab shoes in so many ways, and their waterproof performance is the same, but that Targhee model is a better performer.

Keen Targhee is lightweight but not light enough to consider it as ultra-light shoes.

The extra weight of Targhee ii is related to Traction, padding, and abrasion protection. These things are what make the Targhee ii a popular budget choice for hikers.

Targhee ii performed so well on slimy moss-covered, steep pebbly descents and slick tree roots.

The traction pads, rubber grip, featured more aggressive lugs performing better than the average hiking boot sole on similar platforms.

What we did not like about the Traction of the Targhee ii model is the shape. If you are used to thinner cut shoes with more defined edges, you might discover that the round shapes take a little to get used to maneuvering in some environments.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Good value
  • Extra toe protection
  • Solid Traction
  • Out of the box comfort
  • Cleans easily
  • Distinctive looks
  • No break-in period
  • Laces stay tight
  • Great arch and ankle support
Cons
  • Heavier than trail runners
  • Lacks good breathability
  • Slippery on wet cedar
  • Not so durable
  • Below average stability
  • Not waterproof after seams wear out
  • The fabric found behind the toe cap breaks down faster than other parts of the shoe

Bottom line

Keen Targhee Mid waterproof is a budget-friendly waterproof boot that you will fall in love with. But you have to watch out as it is not the most breathable and lightweight choice you can buy.

 Comfort

Targhee III ranks highly in comfort for a lightweight shoe.

After a tiring day on the trail, your feet will still feel great in these boots. Luckily, these boots takes little time to break in .they will feel comfortable even in the first few hours on the trail.

Targhee shoes have a wide toe box, so if you have wider feet, these shoes will fit you perfectly.

Support

Like the older version of Targhee, the Targhee III has a low heel shaft. This will not be a problem for you, as the low heel allows for more movement and breathability while still providing good support.

Weight –

Targhee III scores highly in this as a lightweight, mid-weight shoe on the trail. It weighs 1 pound 13 ounces that are pretty good for all the leather in the upper.

These boots provide the durability and support that lighter shoes will not.

Actually, the lower profile design of these boots makes them feel lighter when they are on.

Traction

The soles of Targhee III do an excellent job of keeping Traction on the slipperiest surfaces. These soles will keep you upright on loose gravel and wet moss.

The combination of those 4mm lug depths and the tread patterns add to the shoes the ability to stick to any surface on the trail.

Although Targhee III has the beefy rubber toe cap, which is a signature of this line of shoes, the toe is not that bulky as on Keen Targhee II.

These shoes provide plenty of protection and Traction because of their burly rubber sole construction.

Water resistance

  • Water-resistance is another fantastic thing about Keen Targhee III. The Keen. Dry waterproof and the breathable membrane do a great job of keeping your feet dry while allowing for breathability and ventilation.
  • The uppers of the shoe are mostly leather, save for the mesh tongue, allowing the airflow in main spots and water protection in the main portion of the shoe

The seams are burly in the construction, allowing the shoes to be water-resistant for a long while.

Durability

  • The features that making the Targhee III stand out about water resistance also make the shoe incredibly durable.

The leather uppers are satisfieng and burly in design, and the shoes showed little signs of wear and tear during the testing period.

  • The Targhee also has a durable lacing system, and the laces go right through the leather, which is making up the upper.

This seamless design allows for much tension to be placed on the lacing system, with no risk of blowing out an eyelet.

All Muck Boots are 100% waterproof, keeping your feet dry, warm, and protected in any weather and even in messy working conditions.

The secret behind that is the self-insulating, waterproof CR-foam shell building and construction.

The CR-foam material acts as a neutral medium between the inside and outside temperatures.

This shoe is lightweight and comfortable; its materials keep your feet and lower leg warm and protected in wet and cold conditions.

The Natural rubber of the shoe overlays protects the skin for the upper bootie.

The Outsole is made of high abrasion natural rubber. This rubber will stay flexible for years.

The Boots and shoes of this model are available in whole sizes only, but they will stretch to fit half sizes. There is also a 15mm toe allowance built into the sizing.

The shoe’s collar material could be turned down, allowing hands-free removal and vent humidity in the warm working conditions.

Should people wear thick socks while wearing Muck Edgewater?

  • It isn’t necessary unless activities are intended to be in extreme, cold conditions.

The CR-foam material is rated sub-zero during active uses and will handle freezing temperatures for more than an hour.

  • Medium-weight socks should provide the best fit as the shoe’s upper will stretch to accommodate thicker socks.

How does CR-foam compare to other lofted insulations and waterproof membranes?

  • Lofted insulations are used in work and hiking shoes to resist cold temperatures. They are laminated to the whole shoe lining and glued into the toe area. It is not a waterproof material.
  • The CR-foam used in Muck boots is waterproof and self-insulating. Exceeding the long-term effectiveness of waterproof membrane materials and providing greater insulating properties than the non-specialty temperature-control layers.

Do these shoes allow your feet to breathe?

  • One of the most important features of Muck Boots footwear is the Breathable Air mesh lining.
  • Sweat and humidity that might build up in the shoe are wicked away. creating a comfortable environment for your feet

The rubber shell and nylon upper of the shoe are durable, and you can clean it clean up easily using a spray of water or by scrubbing it with soap and water.

The rubber upper can be conditioned with liquid detergent. We do not recommend using conditioners in the outsole area. This might cause the shoe to become slick in wet or snowy conditions.

This shoe is available in a black or moss color and various unisex sizes
